According to the current situation, there will certainly be an energy change in the future. It is already known that there is an energy shortage so the mankind is at the front of the most significant crossroads. The question is whether will be the population used to change contemporary habits and use alternative sources.
The modern habits include the large use of vehicles, electricity and many other facilities that all require energy. The prime source of this required energy since the beginning of the industrial revolution has been the use of fossil fuels. They have been the muscles that have enabled us to develop to such heights. However, there is a problem because the reserves of fossil fuels are running out. The situation is even worse if we consider the fact that these sources can not be renewed. The only solution to overcome the increasing energy crisis is promoting alternative energy solutions.
This program includes the possibility of using renewable natural sources for energy producing. Wind, thermal energy from the depth of the earth, solar energy or wave actions in the shores can be utilized. Thus, the utilization of these other forms of energy is very important. The term “alternative energy” usually represents the production of electricity that is used to power all other facilities, through the use of some natural and renewable resources.
As a source of power, wind is an exceptional option. Although wind has been harnessed since medieval times for “powering” some simple machines, in the 21st century wind is used for producing electricity by means of wind turbines. These turbines generate the electricity by turning movements that is achieved by airflow. However, there are some contradictions that are associated with wind turbines and this way of producing energy. At first, weather and therefore wind can be sometimes unpredictable. If there is no wind the turbines can not be rotated and electricity is not generated. Moreover, the bigger problem lies in cost effectiveness because the majority of companies which are still unwilling to buy their power from companies which use wind energy. Hopefully, it can be changed if governments around the world start to subsidize power generation through wind turbines.
Surely, wind is not the only alternative energy source. There are others, such as tidal energy which uses the power of oceans. This way of producing energy is effective but geographically limited. The same problem is present when we talk about thermal energy; it can not be used where there are no geysers or other underground sources of heat. There is an interesting and endless source of power, nuclear energy. However, time and unfortunate accidents have shown that nuclear power plants are very dangerous. They have too mach side effects so the mankind should not construct any new plant for producing nuclear energy. Solar power is a considerable alternative energy resource, however, there is no sufficient engineering expertise to manufacture better solar cells.
On the other hand, there are some new innovations such as fuel cells. But they are still at the beginning of the development and much time is needed to become substitutes to the fossil fuels. Indeed, the development of the processes of using alternative energy sources is extremely important for the future and it deserves all our attention in order to overcome all the drawbacks that the use of fossil fuels represents.
